Please Attend Wednesday’s Meeting with Our Police Department

November 14, 2009

We need your support and presence at the PSA 501 Community Meeting. This is our opportunity to show not only our unity and concerns about crime in our area, but to directly express those concerns to Commander Greene and Lieutenant Ronald Wright.

Location and time:
MDP PSA 501 Community Meeting, Wednesday, November 18th at 7pm. Harry Thomas Recreation Center, 1743 Lincoln Rd. NE

You should have noticed a stronger police presence in our neighborhood. The police have implemented seat belt check points on certain busy streets such as P ST NW. There are also police vehicles and officers station at certain problem areas (such as First ST NW and O ST NW and the alley between P ST NW and Bates ST NW).

Commander Greene Responds to Crime Concerns

November 11, 2009

Dear neighbors,

We continue to experience an unusual number or robberies at gun point and from moving vehicles. As posted earlier, the area around N. Capitol ST, First ST NW, O and P ST NW has been declared a police Hot Zone.

The week of November 9th, we have experienced 2 robberies from vehicle (where someone jumps out of a moving vehicle and robs a pedestrian) at the 1600 and 1700 block of First ST NW. There have also been robberies at the 200 block of Q ST NW, NY Avenue NW and Florida Ave NW.

We encourage all neighbors to ensure back yard lights are on at night, especially if your yard faces an alley. Please keep your front light on at night to increase street lighting. Be careful walking at night and during the day. Avoid walking and being distracted talking on your cell phone or listening to your Ipod. Be aware of your surroundings.

See response from Commander Greene below.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

We actually apprehended the robbery suspect from the unit block of U street NW last week and made another apprehension on rhode island avenue Tuesday for a subject attempting to commit a robbery.

The light tower is rotated through several problem areas. Citizens at 1st and hanover actually stated they did not want it there anymore, I will ensure it is rotated between the areas we have planned.

The robberies have been a constant battle along north capitol street and the 1st street corridor. We will be doing road blocks all through that area this week to attempt to break up this pattern during our all hands on deck initiative. You will see and even more enhanced effort during that time.

Subject: [MPD-5D] N. Capitol ST Hot Zone is Getting Hotter

Commander Greene,

The N. Capitol Hot Zone is getting even hotter. We now gone from people being held at gun point by one person to people being held at gun point by a group of 6 or 7. We have had 2 robberies from vehicles on the 1600 and 1700 block of Fist ST NW this week as well. It does not seem that MPD’s efforts are having an impact.

I know the beats were changed, 10 new officers were added, but that does not yet seem to have an impact on reducing the recent wave of crime in this area. I have not seen the light tower any where near the vicinity of P ST NW, First ST NW, O ST NW, Q ST NW.

Could you please advise (if you can) any new strategies or efforts MDP is implementing to try to make the area safer?

Thank you for all your efforts.

MPD Responds to Community Safety Concerns

November 3, 2009

Commander Green provided BACA with an update on the initiatives taken by the Metropolitan Police Department to address the resent incidents along N. Capitol Street, P ST, O ST and Hanover.

These are the following actions outlined by Commander Greene:
1.MPD met with business owners on Saturday, October 31st and created a new police beats along N. Capitol Street.
2.Businesses agreed to increase lighting on their businesses’ corridors
3.The light tower is being deployed in the area
4.MDP is doing compliance checkpoints on Hanover, Bates and O Streets
5.10 extra police officers have been deployed to this area
6.Plain clothes officers are doing beats to catch criminals on the act
7.More operations are to come to P ST
8.More focus will be given to the area as nightfall begins earlier this time of year

MPD has been making major arrests in the area. Most recently, the juvenile that robbed the pizza delivery man on 2nd and Rhode Island Ave. NW was captured.

We encourage all of you to represent our community and voice your safety concerns to the MPD at the next PSA 501 Community Meeting. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 18th at 7 PM, Harry Thomas Recreation Center, 1743 Lincoln Rd. NE.

Thank You ANC!!! Tree Box Beautification is a Success

October 31, 2009

Thanks to Anita Bonds, the ANC Grant, Pete Balas (lead organizer), our neighors that came out, CSOSA, and YouthBuild, over 550 plants now beautify our neighborhood. Over 50 boxes on P ST NW, 3rd ST, 4th ST, Bates ST and First ST were beautified. Here are some pictures.

Flower Power ‘09 proceeds, we were able to donate flowering trees to the neighborhood. Keep an eye out for the new crape myrtles, redbuds, and Franklinia that were also planted throughout the neighborhood.

The event started at 6am with a wake up call that Pete received from Home Depot to inform him that the flowers and soil were being delivered at 6:30am and not 8am as scheduled. Pete woke some of us (thanks Pete) and Margaret who was walking her dog, jumped into action to unload the delivery trucks.

Today is the Day to Clean and Plant Tree Boxes

October 31, 2009

If you are up early today, we need your help. Pete Balas, Margaret Stevens and I unloaded the first Home Depot delivery truck containing the flowers at 6:30am this morning. The sencond delivery is soil and mulch, the third is trees.
